Tips on becoming a Pro Golfer?

I’m 19, and a beginner at golf. Do you think I can qualify for the 2011 U.S. Open? I’m willing to put in as much effort into it as I can. I will practice every day. What would I have to do to meet the requirements to play in the U.S. Open? How do I get a 1.14 USGA handicap, how should I prepare for a local 36 hole qualifying tournament? What should I focus on more: Putting, Hitting well off the tee with woods, Short Game or Ball Striking? They’re all important, but which is more important?

Ok, let’s go through this one at a time, since you asked a rather large question.

1. Do I think you can qualify? That depends entirely on you. I have to say the odds are hard against you starting golf this late to get that good that quickly, but its certainly in the realm of possibility if you have enough talent and drive to work hard.

2. What would you have to do to play in the US Open? You would need to go through the local qualifiers for the open spots in the field. Many professionals who haven’t otherwise qualified are in these qualifiers as well as many top amateurs. You need to play very well in these, under par average.

3. How do you get a USGA handicap? Most local golf courses offer handicap scoring for a small yearly fee. Just check out some of your local courses for prices.

4. How do you prepare for a local 36 hole qualifier? Lots of practice in competition. Try to emulate the pressure of tournament play whenever you can. Your swing sometimes behaves differently under pressure, and learning how it reacts then is very important to playing in competition. Make sure you go back to your basics (grip, alignment, setup, ball position, etc) a week or two before to make sure nothing slipped, and work a lot on your chipping and putting. That is where scoring really happens.

5. What should I focus more time on? Tour pros and top amateurs spend about 60-80% of their time practicing the short game (120yds and in). This is because this is where scoring happens. Players have won tournaments driving the ball very poorly because they made up for it on the greens. Start off with a lot of putting and chipping practice. Slowly work your way to longer shots, until you work your way to the driver. The driver should only really be practiced a handful of times in a practice session, if at all. Use a mid iron to work on swing mechanics.

Another tip for you if you plan on trying to get that good that quickly, is to find a PGA teaching professional to give you personal instruction that supports you fully. Get regular lessons from him and let him guide you on equipment fitting, technical improvements, tournament information, etc. They are very knowledgable and make the learning curve much shorter.

Hope this helps, and Good Luck!!
